SOCI 3130 - Medical Sociology

Prerequisites: SOCI 1120 or permission of the instructor. Examines how health, illness, and health care are embedded in society and culture. Emphasis given to processes of medicalization and demedicalization; medicine’s connection to various socio-cultural factors such as gender, social class, race, and administrative cultures; comparative analysis of the U.S. health care system and other health care systems around the world; and the professionalization of medicine.
