SPAN 3700 - Hispanic Short Fiction3 hours Prerequisites: SPAN 3100 In this course, we shall read a selection of short stories by prominent Hispanic writers such as, Borges, Cortázar, Esquivel, García Márquez, Pardo Bazán, Quiroga and Valle-Inclán. We shall explore the specific literary strategies and techniques through which these writers approach what they consider to be the most important sociopolitical, cultural and literary issues in the Hispanic world of their time, and their specific imaginative answers to such issues. The course will focus on the close reading of texts, with the purpose of developing a solid critical vocabulary and advanced writing skills.
