PHIL 3240 - Freedom, Liberty, and the State 3 hours Prerequisites: ENGL 1101 with a grade of “C-” or better or Permission of the Instructor A study of the relations between modern state governments and individual civic responsibility and freedom. The course addresses questions and assumptions about the nature of civic liberty, such as the freedom of speech and religion. How are individuals at liberty (or not) to travel or migrate from one nation to another? Are stateless individuals “free”? How do totalitarian regimes suppress freedoms? Can freedom be lost without individuals even noticing it?
