PHYS 3420 - Quantum Mechanics

4 hours
Prerequisites: MATH 2201 , PHYS 1112  or PHYS 2112  with a grade of “C-” or better.
Co-requisite: MATH 2202   Quantum Mechanics seeks to apply physical and mathematical methods to the investigation of chemical systems.  This second semester course will focus on the application of quantum mechanics to understanding atomic and molecular structure.  Additional topics will include group theory and spectroscopy. Laboratory exercises will cover various examples of computational and spectroscopy techniques. Quantum mechanics seeks to apply physical and mathematical methods to the investigation of small particles such as the electrons and nuclei that make up atoms. This course will focus on the application of quantum mechanics to understanding atomic and molecular structure. Topics include the treatment of assorted quantum mechanical systems (free particles, step potentials, tunneling, potential wells, simple harmonic oscillators, the hydrogen atom, and poly-electron atoms), valence bond and MO theories, molecular symmetry and group theory, and spectroscopy.
