BIOL 2220 - Marine Science

Fundamental biological principles in marine ecosystems will be discussed with emphasis on organisms, communities and chemical processes affecting coastal, benthic and pelagic marine environments. Biological diversity, the role of oceans in global cycles and human interactions with marine systems are also topics of importance. Labs will be a mixture of authentic research involving marine organisms, dissections, and discussions on marine conservation. Three hours of lecture and two hours of lab are required per week. Occasional hands-on experiences will require ability to physically handle moderate outdoor activity (hiking, handling organisms, etc.) and extra costs associated with a field trip to a commercial aquarium.
