BUSP 4230 - Business and Public Policy in Appalachia3 hours Co-requisite: BUSP 3200. This course is an examination of the historical development of the complex relationship between business and public policy in Appalachia. Perhaps nowhere in America has this relationship played a more significant role in the development of a region or so dramatically affected the lives of its residents. Topics include: the early development of the region; agriculture; the impact of industry, including mining, logging, and steel; the Tennessee Valley Authority and New Deal policies; the postwar migration from the region; the Appalachian Regional Commission; mountaintop removal; and contemporary policies and issues. Several field trips are required.
