EDUC 5027 - Literacy in Content Areas

3 hours
Co-requisite: EDUC 5401 This course develops students’ knowledge of methods of teaching reading and writing across the subject areas of science, social studies, and math in order to integrate literacy instruction across the disciplines. Particular emphasis is given to reading, writing, and to the study of expository materials, particularly for middle and secondary school learners. Students develop and critique their literacy-specific practices for their usefulness in addressing instruction and assessment of learners in all content areas. They also consult research on literacy in a single subject area while becoming conversant in the academic language of their own content area. Prerequisites: Admission to an MAT program.
